Eco, For Real — Fuego Atitlán Eco-Hotel, Lake Atitlán, Guatemala

Sustainability

Eco,
for real.

90% local materials
8 waste categories
0 single-use plastic

Fuego Atitlán isn't eco by label. It's eco by construction — the way the yurts sit on the hillside, the materials sourced from San Marcos artisans, the compost toilets, the solar showers, the staff who live here. Every choice is deliberate.

Lake Atitlán is one of the most fragile ecosystems on earth. We believe that luxury and responsibility aren't in tension — they belong together.

How we do it

Six pillars of genuine sustainability.

Built from the land

Over 90% of the materials used to build Fuego Atitlán came from within the local area — volcanic stone, natural wood, handwoven textiles. Our yurts rest on stilts, touching the hillside lightly and leaving the soil beneath intact.

Solar-powered showers

All hot water is solar-heated, eliminating the gas or electric water heaters found in conventional hotels. On Guatemala's Pacific Slope, the sun provides more than enough — and on cloudy days, a backup keeps the experience seamless.

Compost toilets

Compost toilets require no water, produce no wastewater, and return nutrients to the earth. Lake Atitlán has a critical phosphorus problem — by not flushing a single litre into the watershed, we actively protect the lake.

8-category waste system

We separate waste into eight categories: organic, glass, metal, cardboard, soft plastic, hard plastic, electronics, and hazardous. Most hotels in the region use one bin. This isn't about appearances — it's about what actually happens to the material.

Locally sourced food

Breakfast is prepared using produce from local farmers and the San Marcos market. We work with nearby growers to keep food miles short and money in the local economy. Traditional Maya recipes take their rightful place on the table.

Zero single-use plastic

Single-use plastic is prohibited across the entire property. Guest amenities use refillable dispensers. The kitchen operates without cling film or plastic bags. It requires more effort and intention — and it's the minimum the lake deserves.

People

Rooted in the
Maya Kaqchikel community.

Fuego Atitlán employs staff from San Marcos La Laguna and the surrounding villages. The furnishings inside each yurt — the textiles, the woodwork, the ceramics — were made by local artisans who live nearby.

Eco-hospitality without community benefit is greenwashing. Our goal is for every stay to leave the village slightly better than before.

  • Staff recruited locally from San Marcos La Laguna
  • Artisan furnishings crafted by Maya Kaqchikel makers
  • Breakfast sourced from the local San Marcos market
  • Revenue circulated within the lakeside economy

At the property

Luxury and nature,
without compromise.

Volcano views from every yurt

Wake up to Volcán Atitlán and Volcán Tolimán directly from your bed — no hotel lobby, no corridor, straight into the landscape.

Traditional Maya breakfast

Handmade tortillas, local eggs, fresh highland fruit, a smoothie, and Guatemalan coffee — prepared each morning and served at your yurt.

In-yurt massage

Relaxing therapies and massages delivered directly to your yurt — with the lake and volcanoes as your backdrop.

Volcano & lake hikes

San Marcos sits at the foot of two volcanoes and at the edge of one of the world's most beautiful lakes — both are on your doorstep.

Starlink WiFi

Reliable high-speed internet throughout the property. Work remotely from a yurt overlooking the lake — Fuego is one of the best remote work spots in Guatemala.

Fire pit & communal lounge

Evenings gather around the fire pit. The outdoor kitchen and communal terrace are shared spaces designed for unhurried connection.

Common questions.

At Fuego Atitlán, eco is built into the structure, not added on top. Our yurts use over 90% locally sourced materials, we use compost toilets that protect the lake, solar-heated showers, an 8-category waste separation system, and all furnishings are handcrafted by local Maya Kaqchikel artisans in San Marcos La Laguna.

A compost toilet uses no water and produces no wastewater — instead, organic matter is composted naturally. Ours are clean, odourless, and easy to use. We're happy to walk you through them on arrival if it's your first time. For Lake Atitlán — which suffers from a serious phosphorus pollution problem — they're not an eco-gesture, they're a meaningful act of protection.

Solar-heated showers, organic waste composting, locally sourced meals from the San Marcos market, stilt construction that avoids concrete foundations, 8-category waste separation, and a complete no single-use plastic policy.

Lake Atitlán is one of the most ecologically sensitive destinations in the world. Its biodiversity is irreplaceable — and it's under real pressure from development, agriculture, and tourism. Choosing Fuego Atitlán means your visit actively contributes to conservation and the local community, rather than depleting them. That's not marketing. It's what we built this place for.

Permaculture is a design philosophy that mimics natural systems — working with the land rather than against it. At Fuego Atitlán, this shows up in composting, rainwater management, polyculture planting, and using materials that return naturally to the earth. It's the underlying logic behind why the property looks and feels the way it does.
